What does AGLAIA mean?

AGLAIA is a registered trademark of BEECK`sche FARBWERKE. The name AGLAIA is of Greek origin. The goddess of beauty, Aphrodite, had a muse named AGLAIA. AGLAIA may be translated as: the shining, the shine of beauty. We have chosen the name AGLAIA for our plant based natural paints in analogy to Greek mythology where beauty and health are inseparable. It reflects our intention to show that our paints are not only of a ”beautiful shine“, but healthy and in harmony with nature. Since 1968, we again include the experience made by our company since 1894 in connection with purely mineral, lime and waterglass based natural paints, in the new development of our purely plant based paints.

There are versatile motives for us to do so:

Using raw materials that may be renewed any time saves valuable resources during the entire product cycle. A sensitive raw material recovery, a production process based on "gentle chemistry" principles and a troubleless, ecological recycling after use speak for themselves (Fig. 1). Petro, synthesis or retort chemistry (Fig. 2) causing gigantic environmental problems due to the use of all kinds of artificial resins, however, are in clear contrast to ecology. To keep to the point: fossile raw materials such as crude oil or natural gas are much too precious to be burnt, used up and wasted in the way they are today. Already the next generation will be unable to keep up this "luxury". It is, therefore, more than just a question of ethics and responsibility towards our children to look for alternatives as soon as possible. Regenerative energies and renewable raw materials are concepts with a future and based on the life-creating energy of the sun.

Today, we know about the health hazards for users exposed to a large number of retort chemistry substances that, when marketed yesterday, were considered harmless but are found to be carcinogenic or mutagenic today. Since this game seems to repeat itself (substances found "hazardous to health" are replaced by substances "proven harmless" although no long-term experience is available), it surely is legitimate and making sense to rather rely on thousands of years of human experience with certain natural substances.

It is more than alarming that during the last decades more and more people show allergenic reactions against flower pollen, animal hair and dust mites. It seems obvious that the human immune systeme has become so unbalanced that even entirely harmless, omnipresent natural substances to which we are used by evolution suddenly start causing irritations. However, this is not caused by a general allergenic potential of these substances but by the unavoidable permanent exposure to constantly new synthetic chemicals. It would be mixing cause and effect to believe that the problem lies in common natural substances we are used to.

We've got nothing to hide! The AGLAIA full declaration gives information about any ingredient of our products, no matter how small the share in the formulation. This "crystal clear formulation" is a great advantage not only for chemically sensitive and environmentally ill persons who are thus able to check the composition of the product in detail. Such full declaration, however, is far from being standard as you may have learnt from the labels of most (pretend-to-be) bio products. Scenarios such as

colorful flowers, blue angels and highly official quality labels are supposed to pretend nature where it is preferred to avoid a detailed declaration of the ingredients. Probably for good reason since it would read like a page taken from a chemicals catalog. Equally unprecise and also not of much help are "semi-declarations" such as "....food preservative" or "natural plant-based emulsifier".

In a century of prefabricated industrial materials we risk losing the ability to perceive building materials and surfaces aesthesiophysiologically regarding their material nature. To most of us, it does make a difference what building materials we are surrounded by, whether it's homey wood or cold plexiglass. Whoever wants to maintain the natural character of wood will use oil or wax. Artificial resins, however, will result in denaturation

and provide a plastic part with a wooden core, thus being virtually identical to melamine resin coated chipboard. But touching, smelling and sensing will automatically lead us to an entirely natural surface.

We know that especially in living and working areas, including schools and kindergardens, natural paints are the best choice. AGLAIA casein paints and plant-based glazes are hard-wearing with a creative and attractive look. They provide a positive room climate not only in a building physiological sense.

Pure mineral and plant-based paints are mainly selected by well-informed users, planners and homebuilders. Whoever uses paints consciously, wants to properly renovate old framework or is required to reconstruct and redesign a PCP contaminated kindergarden will surely prefer natural paints instead of picking one of those "cheap" mass products. Color chemistry - a synonym for harmful substances, contaminants in living areas and environmental contamination. As if there was no alternative! Natural building materials such as lime, clay, wood and stone have an impressing tradition even in our climatic region. Well-preserved historical building substance is found even today a thousand times in terms of medieval timber frame construction, Romanesque and Gothic churches. In the restoration business, many of the old techniques including the use of linseed oil, casein and earth pigments have survived. It is wrong to believe that constructions (including the paint) are only made to last with the use of "modern", i.e. artificial resin based materials.

And last, but not least, we are motivated by enjoying our job. Developing highly efficient products with the exclusive use of natural substances, without the need to grap into the "miracle box" of petrochemistry, is another never-ending motivation to us.

Independent organizations continue to confirm the excellent ecological and technical properties of AGLAIA natural paints. But even more convincing is the success in practice: AGLAIA has proven successful for more than 30 years on millions of square meters and all kinds of surfaces.
